World Mayors Council on Climate Change

The World Mayors Council on Climate Change was initiated by Mayor Yorikane Masumoto, City of Kyoto (Japan) in December 2005, following the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol in February 2005.

The World Mayors Council on Climate Change (WMCCC) is an alliance of committed local government leaders whose concerns about the effects of climate change on their communities has prompted them to foster international cooperation, and to advocate for effective climate protection policies.

Lady Mayor Bärbel Dieckmann of Bonn (Germany) is currently the Chair of the WMCCC, with Mayor Masumoto of Kyoto City (Japan) serving as Honorary Chair.

There are presently 20 members of the WMCCC, representing a vast network of local governments working to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.   Membership to the WMCCC is open to mayors and equivalent leaders of municipal levels of government.  Mayors whose term has expired are welcome to maintain their WMCCC membership and continue lending their expertise and advice.   Please visit the page 'To Join the WMCCC' for more information on joining.

Please visit the web pages of the WMCCC to learn more about the important work the Council is doing.
