The Water Campaign assists local governments to quantify and qualify water resource use, develop local water action plans, set targets, act on their plans, and track and report goal-achievement.

Some facts on Water
- 1.2 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water
- 2.6 billion people without access to sanitation
- 2.2 million annual deaths, mostly under-5 children
- less than 1% of the world’s freshwater resources are available for human use (UNESCO)
- 2005-2015 is the The International Decade for Action for "Water for Life"
ICLEI contributes to the Millenium Development Goal #7 in the following ways
- ICLEI works closely with national governments and associations of local governments who are interested to reduce water consumption, pollution. The Water Campaign has been particularly successful in Australia where at least 90 local governments have signed up since 2001.
- ICLEI promote access to safe water (especially in developing regions),
- ICLEI and its partners promote Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM).
