ICLEI welcomes Dr. Robert Glasser, United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), as Co-Patron of Resilient Cities 2016.
From this year, Resilient Cities will provide an annual platform for tracking local progress on the implementation of the resilience targets of SDG 11. These targets are supported by the targets of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, adopted in March 2015.
ICLEI is pleased by our continued partnership with UNISDR including in support of implementation of the Sendai Framework at the local level in cities, regions, and small island nations, and through the Making Cities Resilient Campaign.
UNISDR, represented by Jerry Velasquez, will contribute at the Congress in the opening plenary session, discussing alignment of urban resilience efforts and the post-2015 global frameworks, and giving updates on the local implementation of the Sendai Framework, including The Ten Essentials for Making Cities Resilient and Resilient Cities Connect.
They will also participate in a session on July 8th on Resilience Building in Small Island Towns through Disaster Risk Reduction. This session will present how ICLEI Oceania and UNISDR have been working with two Pacific Island cities to apply the Sendai Framework local indicators tool to undertake Disaster Risk Reduction self-assessments and planning. This panel session will explore the practical and strategic responses required to build disaster resilience in vulnerable locations and with vulnerable populations in Honiara and Port Vila. It will also demonstrate how disaster resilience planning can provide a gateway to addressing many other development pressures and hence reduce the pressure for forced relocation or migration.
Dr. Robert Glasser’s Co-Patrons are Mayor James Nxumalo, Mayor of eThekwini Municipality/Durban, South Africa, ICLEI Vice President and Resilient Cities portfolio holder, and the organization of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
UNISDR is a longtime partner of the congress (since the 1st congress in 2010), and ICLEI is privileged to have had their co-patronage previously in 2012, 2013, 2015.
