ICLEI facilitated the Local Government input and preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg August 2002) with the support of the UN Summit Secretariat and in partnership with major international associations of local governments, including the former International Union of Local Authorities, former Fédération mondiale des cités unies - World Federation of United Cities, the Organization of Islamic Capitals and Cities, the Association of the Major Metropolises (Metropolis), the Regional Network of Local Authorities for the Management of Human Settlements (CITYNET Asia Pacific), and the Arab Towns Organization.
