        • Keys to the city from Brisbane and eternal gratitude from ICLEI: The National Local Government Drug and Alcohol Advisory Committee (NLGDAAC) recently accepted the resignation of Jude Munro, who has acted as Committee Chair for the past two years. Jude will also be stepping down from her almost 10-year position as CEO of Brisbane City Council. More>
        • City of Sydney joins CSHC: We are pleased to welcome the City of Sydney to the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Harm Minimisation program.
        • City of Stonnington joins CSHC: We are pleased to welcome the City of Stonnington to the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Harm Minimisation program.
        • CHSC is now accepting participants for 2010/11 in the Alcohol Harm Minimisation program and our new programs, Climate Change and Health and Food Sustainability, which help councils connect with their communities around climate change and peak oil by addressing the human impacts at the community and local level.

        • CSHC food sustainability national consultations: ICLEI Oceania’s Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities program has recently completed national consultations as part of the development of our Food Sustainability program. more>
        • Safer Bars training for CSHC councils: ICLEI Oceania will deliver the Safer Bars training as a 'train-the-trainer' program for participants in the CSHC alcohol program in 2010/11, in some jurisdictions. more>
        • Launch of 2010 Healthy Cities Conference Registration & Call for Papers! The 2010 Healthy Cities Conference will be held at Stamford Plaza Brisbane on 12–13 July. more>
        • New Toolkit now available: The Alcohol-related Harms Data Inventory Toolkit is now available online for CSHC participants to download. more>
        • Maroondah City Council community engagement project: Our Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities (CSHC) team is working with Maroondah City Council, using a community action model approach to engage with the Bayswater North community to address local concerns regarding public space and alcohol-related harms. more>
        • Welcoming the new Director of Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities: After establishing ICLEI Oceania’s social sustainability program, Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities (CSHC), over the past two-and-a-half years, current Director Mark Boyd has decided to step down from the role in order to focus on continuing content development for the program’s three areas of Alcohol Harms Management, Climate Change and Health, and Food Sustainability. From July 2010 Peter Streker will commence as the new CSHC Director. more>

        • NSW Planners Masterclass: Managing alcohol-related harms through land use and urban planning. This Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities workshop will be held in Sydney on Wednesday 17 February 2010. more>

        • The Great Wall of St Kilda: ICLEI member and CSHC participant, the City of Port Phillip, is launching The Great Wall of St Kilda on 4 December, and initiative of Council's Local Drug Strategy. more>
        • Taxi Rank Safety Program: Victorian local governments can now apply for funding through the Victorian Government's Taxi Rank Safety Program in order to enhance the safety, quality and amenity of taxi ranks in areas of high usage. more>

        • CSHC Toolkit Launch: Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities launched a Data Inventory Toolkit for local government on 6 November in Sydney. more>

        • One year on – Growing recognition of the power of local governments to act: ICLEI Oceania's Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities is one year old in October, and in that time has supported local governments to take action on community health and wellbeing. more>
        • Health and the New Urbanism seminar series: This presentation highlights emerging practice from Australia, San Francisco, Toronto and from the 2009 World ICLEI Congress on sustainable solutions to reducing alcohol harms and increasing local access to healthy food. more>
        • New taxi rank safety funding: Victorian councils will soon have the opportunity to apply for state government funding to improve taxi ranks and deliver the greatest safety for passengers. more>
        • The 2009 National Awards for Local Government recently presented the City of Port Phillip with the Community Services Health and Wellbeing Award for their outstanding Health and Wellbeing Program. more>
        • Foundation Council workshop – 15 May 2009: Foundation Councils and key stakeholders attended a recent workshop to provide valuable feedback on a new CSHC program product: The Data Inventory Tool. more>
        • Planning for Sustainable and Liveable Cities: A new short course run by Capire Consulting and the Planning Institute of Australia (Victoria division) is to be held 6 – 9 July in Melbourne. All ICLEI participating Councils may attend at a discounted rate. more> 
        • Advocacy work supporting local government's role in alcohol harms management: ICLEI Oceania has been proactive in ensuring local government is considered in emerging policy responses to alcohol harm and binge drinking. In addition, our Foundation Councils are invited to advocate for ICLEI’s role in supporting local government through Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities. more>
        • Calling for best practice examples in alcohol harms management:
          ICLEI members and participating councils are encouraged to submit examples of their best practice in addressing alcohol and other drugs harms. more>
        • Foundation Councils encouraged to nominate for drug and alcohol awards: ICLEI Oceania’s Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities Foundation Councils are encouraged to submit a nomination to the 2009 National Alcohol and Drug Awards. more>
        • New participants: There are currently 20 Australian councils participating in the establishment phase of Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities. We would like to welcome our newest participants, Wagga Wagga City Council and City of Yarra. more>
        • Events: ICLEI Oceania will share insights and program ideas at a number of presentations throughout 2009. more>

        • Submission to the National Preventative Health Taskforce:  ICLEI Oceania has submitted a response to the Taskforce to ensure a local government perspective is incorporated into the consultation phase of the National Preventative Health Strategy. more>
