About Sustainable Transport

Is this sustainable transport?

Sustainable transport refers to a wide range of actions and technologies that reduce the negative impacts, and improve the positive impacts, of our transport choices. These include social, health and economic impacts as well as environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions.

Actions include all principles, policies and practices that aim to increase the modal share of walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing whilst reducing the demand, need and impact of motorised transport. This incorporates technological initiatives such as alternative fuels, fuel efficient devices and low emission vehicles.

ICLEI and Sustainable Transport

ICLEI Oceania, in collaboration with the Australian Government's Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, assisted CCP Councils to lower transport emissions in their own operations and within the wider community. Sustainable Transport Projects delivered by ICLEI include:

Sustainable Transport Resources

  • Taking Action: Step through a five milestone framework with the assistance of tailored resources to review your current sustainable transport capacity, plan goals and actions to improve on your baseline, and review and re-strategise to keep going.
  • Resources: View a range of interesting case studies and resources to get started on sustainable transport intiatives.
Cities for Climate Protection® (CCP®) Australia: implementing greenhouse action through a collaboration between the Australian Government and ICLEI Oceania. The CCP® Australia Program is funded by the Australian Government.
