About ICLEI
Members
Members can be local governments, municipal associations and regional associations (1078 Members, 1 June 2009). ICLEI also has Associate Members, which are organizations or individuals.
Mission
To build and serve a worldwide movement of local governments to achieve tangible improvements in global sustainability with special focus on environmental conditions through cumulative local actions.
History
The Council was established in 1990 when more than 200 local governments from 43 countries convened at our founding conference, the World Congress of Local Governments for a Sustainable Future, at the United Nations in New York.
Inspiration
ICLEI started with the idea that one municipality can have a measurable effect on a global scale. The cumulative effect of cities working in partnership can be profound.
What we do
ICLEI develops and runs campaigns and programs that address local sustainability issues while protecting global common goods, such as air quality, climate, and water. We link local action to internationally agreed goals and targets.
ICLEI helps local governments generate political awareness of sustainability issues and establishes plans of action towards measurable targets. We help our Members meet these targets through projects and evaluate local progress toward sustainable development.
ICLEI represents the voice of 400 million citizens to the United Nations Agencies as the international agency for local governments on sustainable development. We provide our Members with information, deliver trainings, organize conferences, facilitate networking, carry out research and offer consultancy services.

Biodiversity
Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) Initiative guides local governments and their partners to protect urban biodiversity.
