F1 Governance and Planning Solutions for an Integrated Eco-city Approach

Date: 17/06/2009
Time: 16:15-18:15

Faster and more radical: For visionary solutions addressing sustainable development challenges to become successful, governance and management in cities must be adapted to support this ambition.

Elements of this approach to integrated governance and management are: participatory target setting and implementation, appropriate steering processes, adequate allocation of roles & responsibilities, well informed decision-making at all levels, integrated implementation in all areas of city and regional development, all of these with involvement of all relevant stakeholders and cooperation with other municipalities and levels of government.

After all, local sustainability should form the local contribution to address global challenges. To this end, an overall evaluation of cities’ sustainability performance can serve as a motivating and completing mechanism to collect and present local achievements which take a global perspective.

G1 Viable Local Economies

Date: 17/06/2009
Time: 16:15-18:15

It has been widely accepted that sustainable development means integrating social and environmental aspects of local economic development. But how? Are there any synergies between the profitability of local businesses and better social and environmental performance? What can local governments do in order to move towards being a location of green and socially responsible businesses? This session took a closer look at the example of Tilburg in the Netherlands, and compared it with the realities found in other parts of the world.

The core of the session was the in-depth presentation and discussion of the example of the City of Tilburg in the Netherlands, through comments on the transferability of what was presented. The final part of the session was dedicated to a lively debate between all participants, moderated and visualised by the facilitator.
