City Achieves Highest Level of Environmental Certification

Nine of the City of Edmonton's branches representing more than 70 per cent of staff have achieved ISO 14001 certification, the world's most rigourous environmental management system standard.

"Achieving this is a major milestone in Edmonton's commitment to be an environmental leader. This is a proud day for all Edmontonians," Mayor Mandel said at a celebration of the certification in Churchill Square Tuesday. "From fire rescue to parks to waste management, the City of Edmonton delivers services in a way that meets the highest international standards. We're one of the few municipalities in the world to achieve this certification, and it’s through a community effort as individuals, employees and citizens."

Mayor Mandel and McLeod Elementary School students Laura Reklow and Jarid Moffat attached the first Edmonton Proud to be ISO 14001 Certified decal on seven city vehicles parked in Churchill Square. The decals will soon be on all city vehicles.

ISO 14001 was developed by the International Organization for Standardization with representatives from more than 100 countries including the Standards Council of Canada. An independent auditor found City of Edmonton environmental management systems met the ISO standard.

Two more city operating branches are currently implementing the ISO 14001 standards for certification next year.

"It takes more than good luck and good intention to be green. We’re environmentally smarter as a result of ISO 14001. We understand our environmental risks and opportunities better than ever before and we have a systematic way of managing them," said Deputy City Manager Joyce Tustian. "ISO 14001 certification is not the end of a project. It’s a beginning, the laying of a foundation for continual environmental improvement today, tomorrow and far into the future."
