New Edmonton Facility Closes the Loop on Recycling

A new recycling facility will turn old greeting cards into cardboard drink trays thanks to a unique partnership between the City and the private sector.
The City of Edmonton and Greys Paper Recycling Industries Ltd. announced plans today to build a unique eco-friendly paper and glass recycling plant at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre.

Greys Recycling uses an eco-friendly process for recycling waste paper, cardboard, old cotton cloth, and denim to manufacture paper and paper moulded products. By 2010, when it is fully operational, the facility will process 40 tonnes of wastepaper and cardboard daily.

The recycling operations will be housed in energy-efficient industrial monolithic domes; the domes will be built with an R60 insulation value, use solar sun pipes for most of the daytime lighting, and will use waste heat from facilities at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre. They will also use rainwater and will recycle water used in the manufacturing process.
