Edmonton shutterbugs are being asked to snap images of their city and its sky at night, in order to help put the spotlight on the need for environmentally-friendly lighting. The Lights Down Stars Up photographic competition, hosted by the City of Edmonton and Tangent Arts Incorporated, will showcase photographs that capture the splendour and sensibility of naturally or artificially lit places. Photographs can also depict inefficient or ineffective artificial light, which obstructs clear views of the night sky.
“This competition is the first of many events that, between now and when the City hosts the ICLEI World Congress in June 2009, will build community awareness, energy and action around the environment,” says Brenda Osborne, Director of Community Programs, Office of Environment and Energy.
The top 30 to 50 photographs chosen by the Lights Down Stars Up judges will be displayed for two weeks at City Hall during the ICLEI World Congress – Local Governments for Sustainability – hosted by the City of Edmonton from June 14 to 18, 2009.
Submissions must be received no later than April 30, 2009. Winners will be announced on May 15, 2009.
