Edmonton, Canada to host next World Congress!

Edmonton, host city for ICLEI's World Congress 2009, has consistently demonstrated both its leadership and commitment to sustainability and international cooperation. As a member since 1992, the city has shown a strong commitment to working with ICLEI both in Canada and internationally.

The city, home to 740,000, is located on the North Saskatchewan River Valley, North America’s largest continuous stretch of urban parkland. This 7,400 hectare ‘ribbon of green’ runs through the City’s heart and includes natural areas enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

Edmonton is one of only a few Canadian cities to reach the nationwide goal of a 50 per cent reduction in the waste stream. Edmonton now diverts 60 per cent of residential waste from landfill.  The Edmonton Waste Management Centre and Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant host numerous international delegations, most recently from several local governments in China and groups from Mongolia.

ICLEI’s Executive Committee, Secretary General, and staff look forward to working with the City of Edmonton to build a unique and memorable World Congress in 2009.
