A word from the Secretary General
Dear Members and Partners,
AS you may know, the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012. This December, in
Copenhagen, the world is coming together to agree to the next global
climate agreement. ICLEI’s work in 2009 is guided by this crucial event.
Our vision is to encourage national governments to look at partnerships
with local governments when discussing a new climate agreement. In
2007, we named this process the ‘Local Government Climate
Roadmap’. In an unprecedented global effort, we implemented the
Roadmap with other associations of cities such as the United Cities and
Local Governments (UCLG), Metropolis, C40 and the World Mayor Council
on Climate Change.
With a new “Cities Climate Center” in Bonn, ICLEI is now present at all
the negotiations on climate change. Globally, our experts will be at
the C40 Summit in Seoul, the Carbon Expo in Barcelona, ProVention Forum
Istanbul, particularly at the Local Government Climate Change
Leadership Summit in Copenhagen.
Trusted since the 1990s as a voice for local governments, ICLEI
consults on future climate initiatives with the United Nations
Environment Programme, the United Nations Human Settlement Program and
the World Bank. Our discussions are focused on climate mitigation
including carbon market, and adaptation.
Beyond climate, our work includes water, biodiversity and other
programs. Enjoy this edition of ICLEI e-News and consider learning from
the experts themselves our tri-annual ICLEI World Congress in Edmonton
from 14 to 18 June 2009. À propos: have you already registered?
Online registration is still open at www.iclei.org/worldcongress2009/registration.
See you in Edmonton!
Konrad Otto-Zimmermann.
