"Networking action to involve Local Governments in the EU and international energy and climate debate" (LG Action)

This project is designed to encourage and promote local government (LG) networking on climate protection and sustainable energy through information, mobilization, positioning and recognition.

LGs need to address climate change mitigation and adaptation, energy security and sustainable urban development. Yet effective action requires effective support frameworks - at national and European level. Thus, the project will:

  • provide information to make LGs aware of their powers for change;
  • mobilize LGs by linking them to national, European and international climate protection processes;
  • support positioning by identifying LG needs, develop LG positions, and presenting these to the national and EU governments; and
  • call for recognition by providing advocacy on behalf of LGs towards national and EU governments, to recognize the essential role LGs play in the climate and energy debate.

In doing so, the project shall provide a voice for LGs, improve local-national dialogues, and capture LG needs to empower and support them in climate action.

LG Action is coordinated by the European Secretariat of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, with the consortium partners including Local Government Denmark (LGDK), the Association of Cities and Regions for Recycling sustainable Resource management (ACR+), the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Easter Europe (REC) and the Italian LA21 Association (CA21L).

The project is co-funded by the European Commission's Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) Programme. With a duration of 25 months, it will last until May 2011.

Local Government Positioning - submit your input

Through the LG Action project all European local governments (LGs) and their associations are invited to share their input. This can include views, needs and challenges regarding energy and climate protection at the local level. What is blocking action? What works well? Are there country-specific problems? Does your community have adequate resources to tackle climate change?

Please provide us the LG Action Team with facts and figures that can be used to shape the LG Positions prior to the COP 15 (the 15th Conference of the Parties) where the Local Government Climate Roadmap will present a common position for LGs around the world, and where the European voice will also be presented. Please make use of the on-line questionnaire to share your concerns.

The project consortium will collect information and analyze feedback received, which will be used for the European Positioning that feeds into the international Local Government Climate Roadmap, and will send clear messages to national governments and the European Commission. The results will help to shape the policy debate, as well as link to the Covenant of Mayors and other European sustainable energy initiatives.
