ICLEI and the Indian government to conduct Cities for Life at CBD COP 11

As part of a global movement to bring nature back into cities, ICLEI and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity are collaborating with the Government of Andhra Pradesh, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and the Government of India to organize the Cities for Life summit at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre in parallel to the CBD COP 11. Shri Kamal Nath, Honourable Minister for Urban Development, GoI is expected to inaugurate the event. read more

Draft India-specific GHG protocol open to public feedback

Supported by the British High Commission, ICLEI South Asia is working on a project which seeks to build low carbon cities by developing appropriate low carbon guidelines for two Indian states. Under this project, the draft of an India-specific GHG protocol, titled ‘India Community Protocol for Accounting & Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emissions’ is now ready and open to feedback. Indian chapter of the Green Pilgrimage Cities Network to be launched

ICLEI South Asia and the Green Pilgrimage Network – a program developed by ARC and the World Wildlife Fund- have collaborated to launch the Indian Green Pilgrimage Cities Network, aimed to help different faiths make their holy cities as environmentally sustainable as possible, based on their own beliefs and conviction. 15 pilgrim cities from across India and the world are being invited to attend the workshop. Apart from the launch, the workshop will showcase best practices in greening pilgrim centers and routes around the world.

Inviting Expressions of Interest from Cities for Promoting Low Emission Urban Development Strategies in Emerging Economy Countries

ICLEI South Asia is inviting an Expression of Interest from Indian cities to participate in the project Promoting Low Emission Urban Development Strategies in Emerging Economy Countries (Urban LEDS) by 6 August, 2012. The project, funded by the European Commission, seeks to enhance the transition to low emission urban development in emerging economies. The global objective is to support the promotion of low emission urban development in developing economies by creating model cities in India, Indonesia, Brasil and South Africa to demonstrate and showcase low carbon development strategies; and to create a network that will promote emission mitigation measures in urban development.

AsianCitiesAdapt meeting in Kochi brings stakeholders on board

The Corporation of Cochin, ICLEI South Asia and IIT Delhi on August 14 joined in organizing a stakeholder meeting on AsianCitiesAdapt, a project -- funded by the German Federal Ministry of the Environment Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety -- which seeks to develop local-level climate change adaptation strategies for four Indian cities: Kochi, Madurai, Howrah and Visakhapatnam. The mayor of Cochin participated as well and said he was “looking forward to the outcomes of the study” and would “take required measures based on it.” Read more
