International Forum on Local Governance & Biodiversity Conservation

Invitation and 1st Announcement

ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability, ICLEI’s Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) Programme, and IUCN Countdown 2010 invite you to Urban Nature 2009. This international forum on local governance and biodiversity conservation is taking place 11-14 June, 2009, just prior to the ICLEI World Congress 2009 in Edmonton. This event will provide a forum for exchange of ideas and experiences between practitioners in the management and conservation of urban nature in city environments around the world.  Participants expected to attend are planners and conservation managers in local government, conservation biology researchers, urban ecologists, communications practitioners, ecotourism practitioners, natural resource economists, social scientists and others.

 

Workshop themes include:

  • Leading and pioneering cities’ current and planned activities in the field of Urban Biodiversity
  • Urban Biodiversity tools and methods developed and used at local level
  • Strategies and policies for integrating biodiversity into municipal planning, decision making and action
  • Current initiatives on academic and local government’s work in the field of biodiversity (policy and practice)
  • Outlining how local activities, emerging technical expertise and practical lessons learnt could be included into future global reporting on biodiversity and closely related fields
  • Biodiversity and it’s link with mitigation of, and adaptation to climate change at the local level
  • The role of local government in securing of Protected Areas and stewardship of natural areas
  • Ecosystem services: How cities can measure the economic advantages of good biodiversity management;  incentives for local business
  • Urban Agriculture and Urban Rural Linkages: a contribution to resilient cities?
  • Latest findings of the TEEB study:
