Submission to the Senate Inquiry into the Excise Duty Tariff Amendment Bill

April 2009

ICLEI Oceania made a submission [PDF document, 268KB] to Senate Inquiry into the Excise Duty Tariff Amendment Bill. ICLEI Oceania argued that each tier of government has responsibility for a range of policy levers. Nationally, that includes using pricing and taxation strategies to reduce the alcohol toll on local communities.

In order to do its work most effectively, local government needs the national (and state) governments to play their roles effectively as well. A continued tax on ready-to-drink products and a move towards volumetric taxation of alcohol are important national policy strategies to have implemented.

National Health Preventative Taskforce Discussion Paper

January 2009

The Australian Government recently announced a national Preventative Health Taskforce to consult widely on actions to encourage a dynamic, forward-thinking preventative health agenda for Australia.

To ensure a local government perspective is incorporated into the consultation phase and to support the next stage of Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities, ICLEI Oceania has submitted a comprehensive response to the NHPTF.

The submission has focused on the main discussion paper and the Technical Report No. 3 on reducing alcohol-related harms.
