ICLEI Oceania submits response to the National Health Preventative Taskforce Discussion Paper

The Australian Government recently announced a national Preventative Health Taskforce to consult widely on actions to encourage a dynamic, forward-thinking preventative health agenda for Australia. The Taskforce has developed a number of discussion papers focusing on Australia: The Healthiest Country by 2020.

This is an exciting time for Australian health policy, and ICLEI Oceania is keen to participate in the preventative health agenda, as thriving communities – alongside resilient ecosystems – is the cornerstone to Australia's sustainable development.

To ensure a local government perspective is incorporated into the consultation phase and to support the next stage of Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities, ICLEI Oceania has submitted a comprehensive response to the NHPT.

CSHC at the Healthy Cities Alliance

In March we will be presenting the research from our desktop scan with 20 Foundation Councils to the Healthy Cities Alliance. This scan involved checking the current work of local governments in health and wellbeing: alcohol, tobacco, physical activity and food access, affordable housing, community wellbeing and climate change and health.

We also looked at local governments’ capacity to plan, their working definitions of sustainability, and the gaps and opportunities we can support in the years ahead.

This research was crucial to our program design and it will be exciting to share our findings with others interested in building healthy cities and towns.

CSHC at the Informa Alcohol Policy and Consumption Summit in Melbourne

In late March, ICLEI Oceania has been invited to speak at the Informa Alcohol Policy and Consumption Summit in Melbourne. This high level gathering will be opened by Senator Jan McLucas, Parliamentary Secretary for Health speaking about government policy and action.

Sharing this session is ICLEI Oceania’s Director for Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities, Mark Boyd, who will be presenting "From the National to the Local", where he will outline the roles of federal, state and local governments, as well as community and business, and describe how they can all work in unison to build socially sustainable communities.

This is a great opportunity for CSHC to showcase the leadership examples from its Foundation Councils and seek to align other stakeholders so that our role as a capacity building organisation for local government can work effectively.

ICLEI Oceania has negotiated a discount for all ICLEI members and councils involved in ICLEI programs. Please use this registration form to register at the discounted rate [PDF document, 170 KB].
