ICLEI Climate Program
After the initiation of ICLEI as the first global network of cities and local governments to achieve sustainability at the local level, the Urban CO2 Reduction Project, implemented in 14 cities across the US, Europe and Canada, was the first concrete measure in local climate action.
Following this first initiative and as a response to the adoption of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) by nations at the Earth Summit in Rio in 1992, the 1st Municipal Leaders Summit on Climate Change, held in New York in 1993, resulted in the birth of the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Campaign.
