Resilient Communities
Local Agendas for Resilience-Building and Reconstruction for Sustainable Cities
ICLEI-Southeast Asia is exploring potential start-up activities in preparing Local Agendas for Resilient Local Governments and Communities. While this was launched at the World Summit for Sustainable Development in 2002, the tsunami disaster in December 2004 emphasized the importance of the resilient communities initiative for developing regions. ICLEI offices worldwide are banding together to scope possibilities with ICLEI Members and external partners to extend support to Phuket, Thailand, and, potentially, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Bohol Province in the Philippines has expressed the importance of building capacities for resilience. Local agendas would not be limited to disaster and risk management alone, but would include climate change adaptation measures (e.g., sustainable transport) and application of sustainability management tools (e.g., sustainable procurement).
