Durban offsets LAB workshop carbon emmissions by planting trees
Durban, ICLEI’s Local Action for Biodiversity project founding member, participant city and host of the 2nd International LAB Workshop in 2008, have shown their commitment to the environment by offsetting the carbon emissions generated from travelling to the Local Action for Biodiversity Workshop last year. Both international flight travel delegates and ICLEI staff and local transport carbon emissions were calculated and offset by the planting of 100 trees in an area around the Buffelsdraai Regional Landfill site in Durban. The planting of these trees will contribute towards a massive 62 500 tree reforestation project. All of the trees planted are local indigenous species.
Being carbon neutral, or having a zero carbon footprint, entails achieving net zero carbon emissions by balancing the amount of carbon released (associated with travel) with an equivalent amount sequestered or offset (through for example, planting trees).
