2008 HIGHLIGHTS

  • There are 138 ICLEI members in the Oceania region. We deeply value their support and encouragement and are always reviewing the benefits to make membership more purposeful and rewarding.

  • ICLEI Oceania continued to place staff with member councils around Australia, in order to provide our members and program participants with tailored services and a local perspective. ICLEI Oceania staff are now hosted by the City of Melville, WA, the City of Campbelltown, SA, the City of Melbourne, Vic, Penrith City Council and the City of Sydney, NSW, and Wellington City Council, New Zealand. Brisbane City Council continues to support delivery of CCP Australia in Queensland.

  • ICLEI Oceania’s Accelerating Now! Conference won a Melbourne Award and a Meetings and Events Industry (MEA) Victoria state award for our efforts to deliver a Green Event approach.

  • ICLEI Oceania introduced an approach to link local government to small-to-medium enterprises with the Sustainable Industries Promotion on our website.

  • InterfaceFLOR provided ICLEI Oceania with an entire floor of its environmentally friendly carpet. Our landlord will allocate the value of funds saved through our partnership with InterfaceFLOR towards retrofitting our building in order to make it more energy efficient.

  • Victorian Abatement Practice Change Systems – New partnerships: Local Governments and Farmer Cooperation for Climate Protection. ICLEI Oceania undertook a project for the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) to determine how to effectively utilise the local government sector and associated networks to:
    • identify opportunities for DPI to utilise the infrastructure and networks already created by ICLEI Oceania across local government and capitalise on these to support rural communities’ adaptive capacity to climate change
    • explore the relationships in place between local government, the farming sector and the broader agricultural sector to determine where opportunities lie to make the most of these relationships
    • recommend approaches that local government can establish to assist the farming sector to reduce greenhouse emissions and/or become more adaptive
    • recommend what approaches DPI can establish to support local government to assist the farming sector to manage the risk and optimise opportunities associated with the uncertainty of climate variability and change.

Findings were presented as a report to DPI in March 2008.
