Communities for Climate Protection® - New Zealand (CCP®-NZ): A New Zealand Government initiative delivered by ICLEI Oceania. This Programme is part of ICLEI’s international Cities for Climate Protection Campaign. Visit the CCP-NZ website for more information about the Programme.
The 34 council participants in CCP-NZ represent over 83% of New Zealand’s population.
- CCP-NZ ended 2008 with 34 participants councils, representing over 83% of the New Zealand population.
- The very successful national CCP-NZ 2008 Forum on 2 April in Hamilton drew over 100 attendees from participant council elected members, management, staff and community stakeholders.
- ICLEI Oceania collaborated with Genesis Energy Ltd in the Energy Management Forum on 3 April, a day of highly rated technical presentations and workshops.
- During the July Local Government New Zealand Conference in Rotorua, ICLEI Oceania held the first New Zealand meeting of the Australasian Mayors Council for Climate Protection (AMCCP).
- Following New Zealand-wide consultation, ICLEI Oceania's Carbon Neutrality Framework for Local Government was publicly released in October.
- ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability released its Local Government GHG Emissions Analysis Protocol and ICLEI Oceania completed and made publicly available the New Zealand Country Supplement and guidelines to using this Protocol.
- The AMCCP, established at ICLEI Oceania’s Accelerating Now! Conference in May 2007, is a non-partisan, local government advocacy body comprising 268 councils participating in CCP Australia and CCP-NZ.
- The AMCCP is supported by a Coordination Committee comprising a mayor from each state and territory, plus five New Zealand mayors, and an Advisory Group of elected members in each state.
- The first Conference of Leaders identified key AMCCP agenda items: capacity building for carbon neutrality, accelerated action on climate change, and building adaptive and resilient communities.
- The official AMCCP website, www.climatemayors.com, was launched. In addition to featuring the latest in climate news, the website includes profiles of mayors involved in the AMCCP.
