Water Campaign™ Actions Report 2008 launched

The Inaugural Water Campaign Report 2008 [PDF document, 580KB] sets the scene on water conservation and water quality management for 2007/08.

Senator the Hon. Jan McLucas, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health & Ageing, launched the report at ICLEI Oceania's Recognition of local government in a climate of change! breakfast event during the 2008 ALGA National General Assembly.

We hope the Water Campaign™ Actions Report 2008 inspires local governments across Australia to become more involved in saving water and safeguarding its quality.

2008 HIGHLIGHTS

  • There are currently 120 councils in the Water Campaign™, with 15 new councils joining in 2008. The program saw particularly strong growth in WA, with councils joining up to address water scarcity and quality issues.

  • The Water Campaign’s first annual Water Actions Report was released, highlighting the aggregated water conservation and water quality actions from 24 contributing councils in 2007/08.

  • Three councils reached Milestone 5 in the program: City of Mandurah, WA, Hornsby Shire Council and Penrith City Council, NSW.

  • The Water Campaign™ continued its hosting agreements with ICLEI member councils in order to base staff close to councils participating in the program. State managers continue to be hosted by the City of Melville, WA, and the City of Campbelltown, SA. In 2008 a new hosting agreement was established with Penrith City Council, NSW, which hosts the Water Campaign State Manager for NSW, Qld and Tas.

  • The Water Campaign™ piloted its new Catchment Module with councils in the Peel-Harvey region of WA. The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale, Town of Kwinana, Shire of Waroona, Shire of Murray, and the City of Mandurah have all passed Milestone 1 of the new Catchment Module, which aims to facilitate the development and implementation of an approach focused on catchment level issues between multiple local governments participating in the Water Campaign™.

  • The Water Campaign™ published the 2008 Actions Profile and produced numerous case studies to showcase the actions councils are undertaking to improve their sustainable water management.

Featured Water Campaign™ council case study

Works at Wadmore Park

The Water Campaign™ has produced a number of case studies detailing innovative projects and initiatives by councils involved in the program.

Each Bulletin we’ll feature a different case study so you can learn more about what councils around Australia are doing to put sustainable water management into practice.

These case studies are usually only available to participating councils and are located in the ‘Milestone Resources’ section of the Water Campaign™ website (requires a log-in).

Case Study 2: Campbelltown City Council, South Australia: Wadmore Park Erosion Control Project
Council has developed an innovative Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) approach to address increased stormwater flows, weed infestations and erosion problems at Wadmore Park.
