Proposed SCP Initiatives

Klipheuwel wind farm, South Africa.

The African Local Sustainable Consumption and Production Initiative (ALSCPI) aims to provide assistance to local governments and build their capacity so that they can actively participate at an international level. It will enable African cities to develop and manage their urban centres on a more sustainable basis by mainstreaming the principles and practices of sustainable consumption and production (SCP) in their policy, planning and operational activities.

The specific objectives of ALSCPI are to:

  • Enhance the capacities of African local governments on mainstreaming and implementing key SCP principles and practices that are relevant to their local context;
  • Provide a platform for a more co-ordinated input and support from the thematic global Marrakech Task Forces to the further development and implementation of the African 10-YFP on Sustainable Consumption and Production;
  • To generate concrete and region-specific cases of developing and implementing sustainable consumption and production programmes at the local level as an input to the 18th Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-18).
