LoGo Water

3-year project: 2005 - 2007

The LoGo Water project worked with eight cities, towns and communities in the Limpopo River basin acting as the model for the Local Government Water (LoGoWater) project with funding by the European Commission. Participants were located along the Limpopo River basin, which borders four countries: South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

A consortium of African and European researchers and stakeholders in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) examined scientific findings and practical experiences regarding local government involvement in IWRM. The project aimed to significantly improve the capacity of local governments to fulfill their role in the adoption of sound integrated water resources management solutions and contributed to the achievements related to the Millennium Development Goals. The launch of the project was held in Germany in March 2005.

The objectives of the project were to:

  • gain an up-to-date overview on existing research on local government participation in IWRM;
  • assess the current situation of local government involvement in water management;
  • increase awareness of the constraints on local government in effectively fulfilling their roles in IWRM; and
  • guide local governments on the implementation of actions aimed at adopting and improving IWRM practices.
