History of ICLEI’s Climate Activities in Africa

A solar cooker - harnessing the sun's power.

From July 2001 to end 2006 ICLEI staff members based in Johannesburg worked with a diverse group of local governments to reduce local emissions of greenhouse gases as part of the Cities for Climate Protection™ (CCP) Campaign. 11 South African cities participated in the Africa CCP Campaign. These cities participated as part of a worldwide network of over 687 local authorities that have demonstrated a commitment to mitigating climate change through local action.

The South African local authorities represented were:

  • Buffalo City
  • Cape Town
  • Ekurhuleni
  • eThekwini
  • Johannesburg
  • Mangaung
  • Polokwane
  • Saldanha Bay
  • Sol Plaatje
  • Tlokwe
  • Tshwane

There were a number of successes and the local governments working with ICLEI’s CCP Campaign achieved significant savings through energy efficiency retrofits in municipal buildings in South Africa. Download the case study and a measures report, generously funded by the PEPS program. The case study (found at ICLEI's International Case Study Series as Case Study 92) highlights the process and results from a model building energy efficiency retrofit project in Ekurhuleni, South Africa. The measures report profiles the Top 5 Energy Efficiency Measures Implemented in ICLEI’s CCP network in South Africa.
