About the series of cases
Local biodiversity-related activities demonstrate the benefits that the sustainable management of biodiversity can yield for cities.
The “Local Action for Biodiversity Cities & Biodiversity Case Series” was compiled on the occasion of the Mayors Conference Local Action for Biodiversity (26-28 May 2008).
The event was held in parallel to the 9th Conference of the Parties of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in May 2008 in Bonn, Germany.
Featured cities are leaders on urban biodiversity
Each of the cities featured in this series demonstrated outstanding actions and commitment to local biodiversity.
Many of these cities are also participating in ICLEI’s pilot project “Local Action for Biodiversity”. Several have signed the Countdown 2010 Declaration.
Eight new cases from four continents
The cases show how cities and towns take action in managing their biodiversity and its threats.
The loss of biodiversity disrupts ecosystem functions, making ecosystems more vulnerable to shocks and disturbances, less resilient, and less able to supply humans with essential ecosystem services such as clean drinking water.
The latest cases are about local governments participating in ICLEI’s Local Action for Biodiversity project:

The publication was initiated and co-funded by the United Nations Environment Program - Urban Environment Unit.
