Launch of the CSHC Alcohol-related Harms Data Inventory Toolkit

Sydney, 6 November 2009

The Alcohol-related Harms Data Inventory Toolkit, for councils participating in Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities, was launched by Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP at a meeting of the Council of Capital City Lord Mayors on 6 November.

The Data Inventory Toolkit is a core tool developed by the CSHC program and outlines the indicators and datasets that can assist councils in planning, reporting and monitoring alcohol-related issues at the municipal level. more>

The City of Melbourne and ICLEI Oceania hosted a forum on the upcoming Copenhagen Climate Change talks and the implications for cities and local government.

Panel presenters included:

  • Gino Van Begin, Deputy Secretary General of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability and European Regional Director
  • Kristin Tilley, Director – Mitigation Negotiations, International Division, Australian Government Department of Climate Change
  • Rebecca Falkingham, Director – Climate Change Branch, Department of Premier and Cabinet, State Government of Victoria
  • Dr Cathy Oke, Melbourne City Councillor and ICLEI international Executive Committee.

First Adaptive and Resilient Communities Program workshop held

Participants link regional climate change impacts to Council's strategic goals

Lakes Entrance in East Gippsland Shire was the location of the first planning workshop of the ICLEI Oceania Adaptive and Resilient Communities (ARC) Program.

During the workshop, 15 participants from across council established a risk and opportunities management framework for investigating key climate change impacts in East Gippsland.

East Gippsland Shire Council is one of nine councils from around Australia currently participating in the ARC Program.


The program guides councils through a process of systematically investigating risks and opportunities arising from climate change.

ARC aims to increase council's capacity of responding to current and future climate change risks and to build community resilience.

Jeb Brugmann – ICLEI founder, corporate and urban strategy consultant, and private sector and social entrepreneur – visited Australia to promote his new book, Welcome to the Urban Revolution: How Cities are Changing the World.

ICLEI Oceania, the City of Melbourne and Brisbane City Council hosted special invitation-only forums for members to hear about Jeb's experiences of cities around the world.

ICLEI Oceania held a breakfast event during the Western Australia Local Government Association 2009 Local Government Convention. 

Twenty three councils were recognised for their recent program achievements in the Cities for Climate Protection program and the Water Campaign™. View images.

Delegates were briefed on the work of ICLEI Oceania on climate change and the role of the Australasian Mayors Council for Climate Protection.

Step up!: ICLEI Oceania at the ALGA National General Assembly of Local Government

Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Monday 22 June 2009

ICLEI Oceania Recognition and Briefing Breakfast at the ALGA National General Assembly, 7.00–8.30 am at the National Convention Centre, Canberra.

The event included presentations from Cr Geoff Lake, President, Australian Local Government Association; Martin Brennan, Deputy CEO, ICLEI Oceania; Mayor Felicity-Anne Lewis – Marion City Council, SA; Mayor Glenys Godfrey – Belmont City Council, WA; Deputy Mayor Morris Mansour – Ashfield City Council, NSW; and Mayor Tony Allen, Bega Valley Shire Council, NSW.
 
Councils participating in the Cities for Climate Protection Program and the Water Campaign™ were awarded for program achievements by Cr Geoff Lake.

Commissioner Mick Keelty, Australian Federal Police and Deputy Chair Australian National Drugs Council launched the new Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities program, with additional presentations from Lydia Wilson, CEO, City of Manningham, Vic, and Mayor Ivan Brooks, Mitcham City Council, SA.

Oceania delegation to the ICLEI World Congress & North American Study Tour

14–24 June 2009

ICLEI Oceania sent a delegation to the 2009 ICLEI World Congress, held in Edmonton, Canada, on 14–18 June.

After the Congress the delegation embarked on a five-day study tour of three North American cities leading the way in sustainable development, from 19–24 June. The cities on the study tour itinerary were Vancouver, Seattle and San Francisco. more>

The annual South Australian Water Campaign™ Recognition event was held on Friday 5 June at The Farm Shed Museum and Tourist Centre, Kadina and was attended by 40 delegates.

Water Values - Council and Community Leadership was a recognition and networking event.

As such, it provided an opportunity to present milestone awards to participants, acknowledge our partners and encourage networking between councils and stakeholders.

CCP South Australia State Forum: Local government’s role in community emission reduction and energy data management best practice.

22nd May 2009, West Torrens

The South Australia CCP State Forum was hosted by the City of West Torrens.

The forum provided council environment and sustainability officers and elected members the opportunity to hear from a number of experts regarding community emissions and the chance to consider councils’ role in developing strategies and actions that might be implemented to affect wider change in the community. Participants also learned about best practice data management and heard about solutions to embed information management systems across council.

CSHC Foundation Council workshop

Melbourne, 15 May 2009

The second Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities (CSHC) workshop for Foundation Councils was held in Melbourne on 15 May, 2009.

Key stakeholders including AERF and VicHealth also participated in the workshop, which focused on finalising key elements of a data management strategy.

The workshop provided an opportunity for participants to discuss a key CSHC program product: The Data Inventory Tool.The Data Inventory Tool is a reference guide for local government, and underpins Milestone One of the CSHC program. more>


CCP NSW State Forum: climate mitigation in a changing context – what role for local government?

7 May 2009, Sydney

The NSW CCP State Forum, Climate Change Mitigation in a Changing Context – What Role for Local Government? was hosted by Penrith City Council.

The forum provided elected members, managers and council officers the opportunity to hear from a panel of experts regarding new climate science, the new national policy context and new community expectations. The afternoon session addressed best practice energy and emissions data management.

The event featured speakers from a range of sectors including academia, consulting, non-government, local and federal government and community.

Local Government, the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS), the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting System (NGERS), and Community Emission Reduction

6 April 2009, Brisbane

The CCP Queensland State Forum, Local Governments, the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme and the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) was hosted by Brisbane City Council.

The forum provided elected members, managers and council officers the opportunity to increase their understanding the NGER Act, the proposed CPRS and the implications for the local government sector.

The event featured speakers from Federal, State and Local Government as well as specialist consultants working on climate change mitigation policy and policy responses. With the attendance of the Department of Climate Change, this enabled participants to receive direct responses to complex policy questions and concerns, and to express their views on the draft CPRS legislation.

Participants also heard about the Carbon Neutral Communities research project and upcoming GHG mitigation and CPRS work by the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ).
