ICLEI UPDATE – AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2008NEWS FROM ICLEI OCEANIAICLEI Oceania a winner at the 2008 Melbourne Awards‘Since 2003, the Melbourne Awards have celebrated the people and organisations whose vision and hard work shape the city of Melbourne. Highlighting these achievements inspires and challenges others to make their own contribution to creating a better future for Melbourne.’ Representatives from ICLEI Oceania accepted the 'Community Division Contribution to Environment' award at a ceremony on Saturday 30 August. Promoting sustainable industriesICLEI Oceania’s new sustainable industries promotion puts councils in touch with products and services to help progress the local government sustainability agenda. Effects of climate change already visible in IndonesiaThe Building Resilient Indonesian Cities project team recently visited five major cities in Indonesia to talk with city representatives about how climate change is affecting their environments and communities. Here, climate change is already happening. With 24 small islands now submerged, Indonesia could lose up to 2000 islands by 2030. These issues, along with increasingly stormy seas, are impacting upon Indonesia’s large fishing and farming communities. City water supply systems are overwhelmed and worsened by population pressures, unplanned development, denuding of water catchments and loss of green space. Climate change is also heightening concerns around the millennium development goal targets on health, poverty and housing. As a result, climate change response plans are underway in each city. The most disadvantaged groups in their communities are suffering the most. Their livelihoods often depend on natural resources, while people living in informal slum settlements are often located in low lying areas prone to flooding.
