Edmonton, Canada was a most generous host for the 2009 World Congress.
We were delighted to meet in Edmonton, situated in a region of over a million people nestled in the centre of Alberta. Edmonton is the capital city of the province, and bustles with arts, theatre and cultural events. Edmonton has a solid track record of sustainable practises, including more than 20 years experience with curbside recycling.
Located just three hours east of the scenic Rocky Mountains, Edmonton and area have much to offer visitors and travellers.
In conjunction with and leading up to the ICLEI Congress, a Community Program supporting community-based initiatives, events and activities raised awareness and engage Edmontonians. These environmental themed events and activities included art exhibits, science and technology awards programs, a bicycle rally, musical performances, a speaker series, educational outreach, a neighbourhood green challenge and a commuter challenge, just to name a few. There was also photographic competition for Edmontonians themed "Lights Down Stars Up" that ran to the end of April. Local Motion was a one-month Community Demonstration Project focusing on eco-mobility: walking, cycling, wheeling, public transit and car-pooling. It was healthy, accessible, flexible and encourages vibrant and livable neighbourhoods.
That’s Edmonton For You! featured a sweet suite of new songs about sustainable community, collaboratively composed and performed by leading members of Edmonton’s indie rock scene. There was a free afternoon of new music on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at Louise McKinney Riverfront Park, just down the hill from the Shaw Conference Centre.
