Geneva Climate Roadmap Symposium, Switzerland, 12-14 October 2008
A major element of the Local Government Climate Roadmap “From Bali to Poznan to Copenhagen”
On generous invitation of the City of Geneva, local government associations and networks met for 3 days to coordinate their actions in order to influence the ongoing climate negotiations leading up to COP-15 in Copenhagen.
Convened by the Global Roadmap Partners, the meeting also brought together regional and national associations and networks of local governments and included hearing sessions with experts from UN institutions, academia and NGOs who provided input into the deliberations of the delegates.
The meeting saw general agreement on the key role of local governments in mitigating climate change and facilitating adaptation to the unavoidable effects of climate change. The local government associations and networks will work jointly towards a set of statements that shall be presented to COP14, advocated for during the year 2009 and hopefully consolidated at COP 15 in Copenhagen.
