LAB pioneers meet in Durban for 2nd International Workshop

18 July 2008

Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) is a global urban biodiversity initiative launched by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability in 2006, which works with a selected group of 21 pioneering LAB local and regional governments from around the world. LAB’s first international workshop was hosted by the City of Zagreb in Croatia, which was the first time LAB cities came together to discuss the challenges faced and successes achieved in local government’s management of urban biodiversity.

Durban has been selected to host the 2nd International Local Action for Biodiversity Workshop from 8-10 September 2008, where political and technical representatives from the 21 pioneer LAB cities will meet. The workshop will focus on the various approaches to implementing urban biodiversity planning in cities. At the workshop the LAB pioneer cities will be signing the Durban Commitment, the first international commitment by local government for biodiversity planning and protection. This workshop is the first of its kind for Durban and is a significant international biodiversity event.
