Australia

  • Planning and Transport Research Centre (PATREC): A transport research centre based in Perth that offers education and research programs in transport and logistics.  Also includes access to research papers, news and events, including seminars and conferences, and a forum.
  • Governance and Management of Urban Transport (GAMUT): A collaborative research centre based in Melbourne that promotes and supports sustainable urban transport in Australia and the Asia Pacific region. Includes access to a range of publications, research reports, transport debates and meetings.
  • NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA): Coordinates various initiatives relevant to local governments in NSW and currently offers a diesel emissions training course for reducing diesel fleet emissions.
  • TravelSmart: Toolkits on Bikeability, how to set up a successful bikefleet, Walking School Bus, tools for employers, school and universities.  Links to publications, events and TravelSmart offices and activities in each State. 
  • Low Emissions Vehicles Tool: Part of an initiative of EPA Victoria, RACV and Future Climate, the Greenwheels website enables fleet managers and other users to learn about low emission vehicles and their benefits.  It includes a Vehicle Comparison Calculator for determining the greenhouse and financial savings associated with current and prospective vehicles in different classes. www.greenwheels.com.au/home
  • Heart Foundation Walking Groups: led by local volunteer Walk Organisers with a regional coordinator who acts as the main contact point for the region. The Heart Foundation also provides support and resources to establish and maintain the walking groups.
  • Victorian Transport Policy Institute - On-line Encyclopaedia of Travel Demand Management (TDM): A comprehensive source of information on innovative management solutions to transportation problems. It provides detailed information on dozens of demand management strategies, plus general information on TDM planning and evaluation techniques.  Produced by the Victoria Transport Policy Institute to increase understanding and implementation of TDM.
  • Local Government Transport Strategies: Transport strategies from 11 metropolitan and regional councils in Victorian available to download on the Department of Planning and Community Development website.  Click on Department of Planning and Community Development, Local Government Research Network (LGRN) and Transport Strategies, Metropolitan Melbourne and Regional Victoria.
  • Darebin: Going Places: (commitment plus rewards – funded through TravelSmart).  Extensive website including walking and cycling pages, TravelSmart together grants, TravelSmart communities, car-sharing, Get out There (funded by TravelSmart), Preston Market home delivery trial, Travel Plan guidelines for developers, Workplace Challenges, Going Places Schools, Bike Ed training for schools and community.  Reports, cases studies and materials also available.
  • National Cycling Strategy: The Australian National Cycling Strategy 2005-10, produced by Austroads, endorsed by the Australian Transport Council, and managed and coordinated by the Australian Bicycle Council.
  • The Pedestrian and Bicycle Transport Institute of Australasia: A networking and educational association for professionals involved in pedestrian and bicycle planning in Australasia. Managed and led by transportation professionals who work at all levels of government and for private consultants on a wide range of activities. 
  • Cycling Resource Centre: Information on engineering & planning for bicycles, education and training, encouragement and promotion, enforcement and road safety, funding and research. 
  • Guttermonkey: An international database of cycling routes established by a group of Sydney cyclists.  Using links to Google Maps, the site enables users to search for routes in places all over the world, add routes and create networks.
  • Bikely: Another international site that uses Google Maps, with a growing database of bike routes including many in Australia.  Searchable by state, region, city, type of ride (urban, commute training etc.), difficulty and distance. 

International

  • Best Urban Freight Solutions (BESTUFS): The main objective of BESTUFS is to identify, describe and disseminate best practices, success criteria and bottlenecks of urban freight transport solutions.  One important outcome of the work is a Good Practice Guide.
  • Biofuels cities: Open to all stakeholders in the area of biofuels for vehicles; seeks to integrate European research and pilot application of biofuels for vehicles with a focus on application at the local level.  
  • BYPAD: Instrument to enable municipalities to evaluate and improve the quality of their local cycling policy.  Includes lots of case studies. 
  • CIVITAS: CIty-VITAlity-Sustainability. EC Initiative that aims to generate a decisive breakthrough by supporting and evaluating the implementation of ambitious integrated sustainable urban transport strategies.  Massive resource database for case studies on eight basic building blocks of an integrated strategy, with 4-13 sub-categories in each and at least 4 and up to 20 case studies on each (see Civitas measures).  Available tools include the GUIDEMAPS handbook for successful transport decision-making and a guide for local governments on making campaign on smarter transport choices work.
    • Trendsetter: A CIVITAS project involving 54 individual projects, all of which aim to; improve mobility, quality of life, air quality, and reduce noise and traffic congestion. Five European cities participate to ensure real impact, by setting good examples and encouraging others to follow.  Information and cases studies on each project. 
  • The City Fix: Exploring Sustainable Solutions to the Problems of Urban Mobility. Blog produced by EMBARQ, the WRI’s Centre for Sustainable Transport - focuses on the intersection of transportation, design, environmental science, and urban planning to examine the myriad ways that cities can adapt and ensure that the current wave of urbanization is good for humanity and the environment.
  • SMILE project: A tool for local authorities - database of 170 successful and replicable practices for sustainable mobility.  Includes 'Recommendations' documents to facilitate the replication of these practices.  Reports on the demonstration projects involving 14 champion cities in Europe.  Links to other useful documents and organisations.
  • SIPTRAM (2003-05): aimed to encourage local and regional authorities across Europe to improve their environmental and social standards in urban public transport through the competitive tendering process.  Good practice guide and case studies, also project report on hidden subsidies in motorised private transport.
  • Global Alliance for Ecomobility: Launched at the UN Climate Change conference in Bali December 2007. A cross-sectoral partnership for the integrated promotion of walking, cycling, wheeling and use of public transport to improve health and the urban environment and to mitigate global climate change.  Founding members: UNEP, UN-HABITAT, ICLEI, other companies, groups and experts from USA, Europe, Asia.  Includes the Bicycle Federation of Australia.  Expectations and vision of the alliance still to be developed.  Watch this space!
