Case studies

Vehicle Fleet

  • Reducing Emissions from your Council fleet (CCP Australia Fact Sheet) [PDF, 56 KB]: This fact sheet describes several forms of alternative fuels and technologies, possible savings from vehicle substitution and hints for driving carefully and gently to save emissions.
  • Vehicle substitution to reduce greenhouse gases (CCP Australia Fact Sheet) [PDF, 68 KB]: This fact sheet outlines some of the options available for substituting larger vehicles with smaller more efficient ones, and the costs and emissions associated with these substitutions. It also highlights ways in which emissions-savings can be made through driver behaviour.
  • Fuel substitution to reduce greenhouse gases (CCP Australia Fact Sheet) [PDF, 52 KB]: This fact sheet identifies and gives a brief overview of alternative fuels available for vehicles and some of the associated costs and savings.
  • Staff Travel Assistance: By subsidising staff public transport fares to and from work, North Sydney Council has enhanced Council’s ability to attract and retain employees while also having a positive impact on the environment . The Travel Assistance Scheme offers interest-free loans for annual travel passes for Council staff, which they gradually repay through salary deductions.
  • Hume City Council fleet fuel includes biodiesel: This case study highlights council's use of federal funding in switching 100 fleet vehicles to 20% biodiesel fuel. The project required minimal funding from council and mitigates over 200 tonnes of CO2e per annum.

Community Transport

  • Walking and Bicycle pathways: Surf Coast Shire's strategy to provide comprehensive walking and bicycle pathways throughout the Shire included an innovative consultation process that involved multiple council departments, community groups and regional alliances. The increased pathways use will achieve savings in greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs, as well as encouraging active lifestyles.

International Examples
