At UN Biodiversity Conference ICLEI presents 14 cases of local action for biodiversity
26-05-08
Each of the cities selected to feature in this series has demonstrated outstanding activities at the local level as well as strong commitment to biodiversity in the international arena. Many of these cities are also participating in ICLEI’s pilot project “Local Action for Biodiversity”, several have signed the Countdown 2010 Declaration and some also host other CBD activities.
Cases as introduction
The cases described in this series highlight the range of different activities that cities are undertaking to better conserve and manage biodiversity. The aspects highlighted in the cases are intended as appetizers to demonstrate part of the work that these cities are currently engaged in.
Partners
Initiated and co-funded by UNEP’s Urban Environmental Unit, the text for these case studies was compiled and edited by ICLEI’s Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) project team in the ICLEI Africa Office in Cape Town, South Africa, with support of ICLEI’s International Training Centre, Freiburg, Germany. Generous support was provided by Countdown 2010, the CBD Secretariat and the cities themselves.
More information
Further details about the cities’ other biodiversity-related activities, Cities’ Biodiversity Reports, Cities’ websites and related documents as compiled under ICLEI’s Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB), are available from ICLEI / LAB. Photos documenting biodiversity in an urban context are rare.
ICLEI aims to continue and expand this series, contingent upon availability of resources for research, writing and production.
