CLIMATE CHANGE EVENTS – AUSTRALIA

National Conference: Responding to Sea Level Rise

3–5 August 2008, Coffs Harbour NSW

One of the key issues for coastal and tidal councils is the impact of sea level rise (SLR) over the long-term and, more immediately, the combined impact of storm surges and high tides on coastal infrastructure.

The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (IPWEA) is holding a national conference focusing on engineering practical climate change solutions. The Responding to Sea Level Rise conference will be an opportunity to learn from the experiences of many local governments that have been involved in the development of coastal and estuarine management response to sea level rise.

The conference will focus on practical strategies and solutions, targeting engineers, planners, consultants, technical staff, elected members and council CEOs.

The strong response to the Call for Papers has resulted in the development of two presentation streams. Topic areas to be covered include the extent and impact of SLR, risk management and adaptation responses, land use planning, storm tide events, community engagement, emergency management responses and planning, and more.

Registrations are now open with early bird offers closing on 4 July. Further information, including the detailed program, is available from the IPWEA website.

NSW climate change forums

April–August 2008, New South Wales

The NSW Local Government and Shires Association is organising a series of regional climate change workshops across New South Wales as part of their Climate Change Action Pack.

These workshops will examine climate change science and predicted impacts, government policy, risk assessment, liability, health, infrastructure and community education.

Elected members and staff from all levels of council are invited to attend.

The first two workshops in the series were held in Lismore and Dubbo, and both received a high level of attendance from a range of stakeholders and positive feedback on presentations.

Representatives from ICLEI Oceania’s CCP Australia program will be presenting at each of the forthcoming workshops to provide background on the organisation and CCP program, more detailed information on the CCP Adaptation Pilot program and outline future directions for CCP.

Workshops have been scheduled for the following locations and dates:

  • Cowra, 28 July
  • Moree, 5 August
  • Albury, 19 August
  • Batemans Bay, 21 August
