Assessment of Urban Environmental Accords in India
ICLEI-SA is carrying out the first review of implementation of Urban Environmental Accords in Indian Cities. 16 Indian cities along with 99 other international cities had given commitment to implement the accords by signing a joint agreement on 5th June 2005 at San Francisco, USA with other participating mayors from various countries.
UEAs are described as the synergic extension of the efforts to advance sustainability, foster vibrant economies, promote social equity and protect planet’s natural resources and acknowledged as furthering obligations and spirit of 1972 Stockholm Conference, 1992 Earth summit, 1996 Istanbul Conference on Human settlements, the 2000 Millennium Development Goals and 2002 Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development.
The major issues of the urban areas addressed through the accords are energy, waste reduction, urban design, urban nature, transportation, environmental health and water. Cities across the world are making efforts to implement the 21 agreed actions under the accord agreement before 2012. However since 2005 there has been no reporting or review of the implementation status from the committed Indian cities. ICLEI-South Asia is assisting the ASEM, India – GTZ (the German Technical Corporation) to report the status of UEA implementation through City Environmental Performance Report (CEPR) covering all 16 Indian cities.
The total period for carrying out this status review is eight weeks and cities that have been able to best achieve the targets will be suitably felicitated. All sixteen cities have already been contacted and the data collection regarding the implementation is going on. The duration for data collection has been extended till 20th June based on requests by participating cities.
