Webcast: “Bonn Call to Action” submitted by local governments at the UNCBD COP9
On Thursday 29 May 2008, 150 local government representatives from over 30 countries, representative of over 100 million city dwellers from all over the world, submitted the “Bonn Call for Action” to the plenary session of the ministerial segment of the 9th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in Bonn, Germany.
The Bonn Call for Action recognises local governments are key actors in conserving and managing biodiversity – both locally within their own administrations and globally, as resource consumption within urban areas affects ecosystems around the world. It recognises local governments’ commitment towards cooperation and action and, at the same time, requests a multilevel partnership to improve biodiversity globally. It appeals for substantial support in local governments’ endeavours and for policy framework conditions which enable them to fully unfold the local potential for protecting global biodiversity. In addition, it recognises that local governments offer to work with national governments and the international community as reliable partners for implementation, communication and outreach.
