How to Align Planning, Land Use and Climate Protection
Biography:
Alex Hinds has managed county land use and resource agencies in California for the past 24 years. Since 1999, Alex has directed the Marin County Community Development Agency, where he oversees the building, environmental health, federal grants, and planning divisions. Previously he served as the San Luis Obispo County Director of Planning and Building, the Lake County Planning Director. Alex was a former president of the California County Planning Director’s Association and is currently the president of the California Planning Foundation.
Alex taught classes at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, and at San Diego State University, Imperial Valley Campus. Alex is currently the president of the board of the California Planning Foundation. Alex has been responsible for the preparation of many award-winning planning documents and programs including Marin County’s sustainability program which was selected for the coveted American Planning Association’s 2008 National Award for Excellence - and was the driving force behind the update to the Marin Countywide Plan which is one of the first local general plans in the nation to comprehensively addresses climate change and sustainability issues. Mr. Hinds is one of the founding members of the recently established Green Cities (and Counties) of California and a frequent presenter at national, state and regional forums. Alex was a former Fulbright scholar in Ecuador and received a Masters Degree from United States International University in San Diego focusing on cross cultural community environmental management, and a Bachelors Degree from the University of Hawaii concentrating on Applied Ecology.
