ICLEI UPDATE – APRIL/MAY 2008

NEWS FROM ICLEI OCEANIA

Building Resilient Indonesian Cities Project

From left: Emma Clark and Steve Gawler

Having recently worked with our nearest Asian neighbour to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create sustainable cities, ICLEI is now broadening its focus in Indonesia to support initiatives in response to climate change.

Steve Gawler, the former CEO of Frankson City Council, has joined ICLEI Oceania as the director of its new ‘Building Resilient Indonesian Cities' Project.

Emma Clark is taking on a new role as the Project and Research Officer.

The ICLEI Oceania Building Resilient Indonesian Cities Project has been funded in 2008 as part of a major new Rockefeller Foundation climate change initiative that concentrates on building resilience to a changing, challenging natural environment.

A component of this initiative will focus on Asian cities where more than 60% of the increase in the world’s urban population will occur in the next 30 years.

The Building Resilient Indonesian Cities Project will work with five Indonesian cities in Phase 1 to identify risks and opportunities associated with climate change and, in a potential Phase 2, develop a methodology, tools and templates for cities to utilise.

Accelerating Now! Conference wins Victoria MEA award for event organisers

The Meeting Planners and ICLEI Oceania have won a Meetings & Events Industry (MEA) Victoria state award for our efforts to deliver a Green Event approach to the Accelerating Now! conference, held in May 2007.

The judges were particularly impressed with the conference being a carbon neutral event, and the efforts undertaken to reduce the associated carbon, waste and paper that can be produced through large gatherings of delegates at conferences.

Accelerating Now! was one of the first events where all carbon produced from travel to attend the conference was offset.

“I couldn’t be more delighted with this award,” said the Meeting Planners' Chief Executive Karine Bulger.

“Executing a truly carbon neutral event is a challenge for all of us in this industry.  We were very fortunate to partner with ICLEI and work collaboratively to achieve this goal. The award is now in the running for the MEA national awards being held in Alice Springs in May.

A case study outlining the 'Green Event' approach adopted for Accelerating Now! is available from the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts website.

NEWS FROM ICLEI INTERNATIONAL

Fact sheets on urban biodiversity

ICLEI’s International Training Centre and Countdown 2010, an initiative of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), have jointly compiled several fact sheets on Urban Biodiversity for local government.

The fact sheets are now available on the Countdown 2010 website and include:

  • Joining Hands: Networks for Biodiversity Action
  • Halting Biodiversity: A Global Mandate to Act
  • Local Authorities for Biodiversity Management
  • Regions as Drivers of Biodiversity Management
  • Involving Citizens in Biodiversity Management
  • Biodiversity and Climate Change
  • Managing Greenspaces for Urban Biodiversity

The seven fact sheets are brief, four-page documents which will familiarise local governments with essential facts and arguments on urban biodiversity and opportunities for more effectively managing biodiversity in cities and town.

The fact sheets are part of the outcomes of a one-year project on local and regional authorities for biodiversity funded by the Dutch Government. IUCN/Countdown 2010 and ICLEI have worked together as one element of their increasing cooperation.

Countdown 2010 is a powerful network of active partners working together towards the 2010 biodiversity targets. Countdown 2010 now has more than 160 local government partners who have committed to go the extra mile to save biodiversity by making two commitments relevant to their area and activities.
