Steve Gawler, Director, Indonesia Project and Senior Adviser
Steve has been appointed Project Director Indonesia to coordinate ICLEI Oceania's Rockefeller Foundation-funded Indonesian Resilient Cities Project.
Steve has held senior management positions in local government in both Victoria and South Australia for the last 20 years. He was CEO of the City of Holdfast Bay in Adelaide from 2001 to 2004 and CEO of Frankston City Council from 2004 to 2008.
Over this period Steve had responsibility for most portfolio areas. At Frankston he established a sustainability framework comprising a suite of policies, long-term vision, triple bottom line tools, state of the city reporting, long term asset and financial plans.
Prior to local government, Steve was a teacher in the Victorian secondary school system for 18 years. During some of this period he was a regional curriculum consultant.
In addition to the usual range of CEO responsibilities, Steve has also taken an active interest in capacity building for local government in developing countries. In January–February 2005 he worked in KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa as a short-term adviser to the provincial department of local government.
In 2007 Steve worked as an adviser to ICLEI Oceania on a voluntary basis to help scope a partnership program between Australian and Indonesian cities around climate change. He has a strong interest in Indonesia and its relationship to Australia and is able to converse in Bahasa Indonesia.
Nelly Belperio, Program Support Officer, Cities for Climate Protection Australia
Nelly joins the ICLEI Oceania Cities for Climate Protection Australia Program as a CCP State Manager. Completion of a Bachelor of Social Science, Environment, led Nelly to work for local government as an environment project officer. This experience developed her interest in Australian flora.
Hartmut Fuenfgeld, Program Coordinator, Integrated Sustainability Services
Hartmut joins ICLEI Oceania as Program Coordinator with Integrated Sustainability Services. Before moving to Melbourne from Germany, Hartmut was with the ICLEI World Secretariat and the ICLEI International Training Centre.
Hartmut has also worked as a lecturer in geography and as an international development consultant in the areas of natural resource management and conflict transformation. He holds a PhD in Human Geography from the University of Heidelberg, Germany.
This issue we say farewell to Lara Fiscalini, who was the Executive Assistant in the Melbourne head office for two years. We thank her for all her hard work and wish her the very best in her new role with the Victorian Government Department of Planning and Community Development.
