Integrated Sustainability Services – APRIL/MAY 2008

A new face for ICLEI Oceania's sustainability services

UNIT UPDATE

New arrivals

Ruth Henshall, ISS Project Coordinator, has recently left the ISS team to embark on a new journey into motherhood. Hartmut Funfgeld has started with the team and will be Ruth's replacement over the next seven months.

Prior to ICLEI Oceania, Hartmut worked directly for the Secretary-General at the ICLEI World Secretariat. The ISS would like to warmly welcome Hartmut to the team. His wealth of international expertise will be of great value over the next seven months.

Kate McKeand, ICLEI Sustainability Services Executive Manager, will also be leaving for maternity leave at the end of April and will return in early 2009.

During this time, John Collins, Helen Scott and Hartmut Fuenfgeld will continue to deliver the TBL program, work with ICLEI Oceania Executive on the development of Integrated Sustainability Services and remain as the key contacts for the ISS team.

Reporting workshop

DSE Annual Report

On Thursday 20 March ISS visited the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) in Melbourne to work with its Planning and Performance team.

In addition to presenting on sustainability integration and reporting, ISS led a facilitated session on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) frameworks and a session identifying the links between GRI, an EMS, the Victorian Government's FRD24C policy requirements, and the new ResourceSmart for Government program.

An interactive, group breakout session allowed the cross-functional team to get to know each other better as well as review the Department’s report in small groups.

The breakout session included a Report Evaluation tool, which assisted the team in determining the strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement of the Department’s 2007 Annual Report.

This is the first year the Department has incorporated its sustainability report with its annual report, measuring the Department's performance against Global Reporting Initiative indicators.

ISS commends DSE Victoria for showing significant leadership in developing its sustainability reporting processes. The report contains an update on the key activities and initiatives of the Department and an environmental, financial and social report on the Department’s performance.

A PDF version of the report is available from the DSE website.

Victoria Park – Developing Strategic Indicators

ISS recently visited the Town of Victoria Park in Western Australia to work with the Town's cross-functional, Triple Bottom Line Working Group on reviewing and redeveloping its Strategic Indicators to coincide with the review of its Strategic Plan 2004–2013.

Council's Indicator Self-assessment, along with ISS's Indicator Review, identified that a reassessment of its existing indicators would be beneficial.

Victoria Park has a cascading set of Key Result Areas (KRA), strategies and performance measures. To develop appropriate strategic indicators, Council was required to identify key outcomes under each KRA. Up to ten key outcomes were developed as well as draft indicators to relate to each KRA and outcome.

Council is currently in the process of determining whether the developed outcomes will be included in the reviewed Strategic Plan.

The cross-functional aspect of the Triple Bottom Line Working Group allowed a broad range of outcomes and indicators to be developed. Members of the team were also committed to developing high-level strategic outcomes, which aligned well with the Strategic Plan review.

The Town of Victoria Park has been a participant in ICLEI's TBL Program since October 2006, and is close to completion.
