ICLEI UPDATE

NEWS FROM ICLEI OCEANIA

COP 13: Results and outcomes of the Local Government Climate Sessions

The Hon. Peter Garrett, Australian Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, at the ICLEI Oceania Climate Action in Indonesia event

Local Government representatives from around the world showed a strong presence at the United Nations' Climate Change Conference in Bali, 3 to 14 December 2007.

ICLEI International hosted the Local Government Climate Sessions, where local government leaders exchanged experiences and knowledge on tackling climate change.

Local government representatives also demonstrated their active role in the international efforts to tackle climate change during various events during the UN conference.

For further information on the Local Government Climate Sessions in Bali please visit the ICLEI Local Government Climate Sessions website.

During the conference ICLEI Oceania, in partnership with the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership, hosted Local Climate Action in Indonesia on Tuesday 11 December 2007. The event was an opportunity to gather key Indonesian cities, the Indonesian Government, the Australian Government, Australian cities and potential partners to this work.

We were very fortunate to have the Hon. Peter Garrett, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, attend and acknowledge the work of Australian councils in the Cities for Climate Protection program.

Call for interest: ICLEI Oceania Local Action Goes Global – USA/Canada Study Tour

ICLEI Oceania is planning an international study tour for October 2008.

We invite elected members, chief executives and senior managers from ICLEI member councils or campaign participants in Australia and New Zealand to express their interest.

For a number of years our members and participants have requested that we lead an international study tour. Many have engaged with our international networks through ICLEI World Congresses or annual conferences and expressed the positive nature of these experiences.

The ICLEI Oceania Local Action Goes Global – USA/Canada Study Tour will be an opportunity to visit North American councils driving sustainable development, while networking with experienced leaders in your fields of interest.

You will also be immersed in real-life examples that could assist you to achieve your own corporate and community environmental objectives at home.

Read the First Notice and Expression of Interest [PDF document, 135KB] or contact Maria Simonelli for more information.

New AMCCP website - climate mayors

2008 presents opportunities for Australian and New Zealand local government to build on its experience and success in tackling climate change through ICLEI's international Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Campaign.

The Australasian Mayors Council for Climate Protection (AMCCP) initiative can harness these opportunities by providing over 260 CCP councils across Australia and New Zealand with a political focus for furthering their action on climate change.

Visit the new climate mayors website to find out how your council can be involved.

ICLEI’s International Emissions Analysis Protocol

As cities all over the world continue to rapidly join the climate protection movement, the need for common conventions and a standardised approach to quantifying greenhouse gas emissions is more pressing than ever.

In response to this need, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability has developed the International Local Government Greenhouse Gas Emissions Analysis Protocol and the International Local Government Greenhouse Gas Emissions Measures Analysis Protocol.

These protocols provide guidance to local governments in accounting for greenhouse gas emissions and reductions in both their own operations and in the communities that they govern.

Over 300 individuals and organisation in Australia and New Zealand were invited to provide feedback on the Emissions Analysis Protocol and we thank them for their contributions.

We now invite you to review and comment on the Measures Analysis Protocol, which is available from the ICLEI International website. You are welcome to comment on only certain sections of the protocol where you feel you can add value.

This international process will be followed, over the coming months, by a further Australia Supplement review period. An invitation to comment on the supplement will be issued at a later date.

If you would like to contribute to the public comment version of the International Protocol please email Stephen Kenihan, ICLEI Oceania Technical Advisor.
