ICLEI—Local Governments for Sustainability is an international association of local governments and national and regional local government organizations that have made a commitment to sustainable development. More than 700 cities, towns, counties, and their associations worldwide comprise ICLEI's growing membership. ICLEI works with these and hundreds of other local governments through international performance-based, results-oriented campaigns and programs.
The World Mayors Council on Climate Change (WMCCC) is an alliance of committed local government leaders whose concerns about the effects of climate change on their communities has prompted them to foster international cooperation, and to advocate for effective climate protection policies
United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) represents and defends the interests of local governments on the world stage, regardless of the size of the communities they serve. Headquartered in Barcelona, the organisation’s stated mission is: To be the united voice and world advocate of democratic local self-government, promoting its values, objectives and interests, through cooperation between local governments, and within the wider international community.
Metropolis is the World Association of Major Metropolises. Metropolis is also the metropolitan section of the United Cities & Local Government organization (UCLG), which arose from the merger between the IULA and UTO.
CITYNET is a Network of Local Authorities that Promotes Sustainable Urban Improvement Initiatives in the Asia-Pacific.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is headed by the Minister, Ms. Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul, the Parliamentary State Secretary Ms. Karin Kortmann and the State Secretary Mr. Erich Stather. It aims to help to resolve crises and conflicts in a peaceful manner. It aims to help to ensure that scarce resources are more equitably shared, and that our environment is preserved for coming generations. And it aims to help reduce poverty.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is part of the UK government. The overarching challenge for Defra is to enable everyone to live within our environmental means. This is most clearly exemplified by the need to: tackle climate change internationally and through domestic action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and secure a healthy, resilient, productive and diverse natural environment.
The Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) is the federal government’s of Switzerland centre of environmental expertise and is part of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication.
The Ministry of the Environment is a government ministry in Sweden responsible for environmental issues and construction. The ministry also has the overall responsibility for coordinating the government's work on sustainable development.
