World Mayors and Local Governments Climate Protection Agreement launched

With the eyes of the world on the climate change negotiations in Bali, local governments and world mayors have launched a global agreement to address the challenge of climate change, and to address the opportunities.

The World Mayors and Local Governments Climate Protection Agreement states that mayors and local governments accept the challenge and responsibility to lead and take action to combat the dangerous rate of warming of the
planet. Modeled loosely on the successful US Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement, the Agreement sets forth six commitments that not only address the challenge of climate change, but also embrace the opportunities.

The World Mayors and Local Governments Climate Protection Agreement was officially launched on Wednesday 12 December during a side event at the UN Climate Change Conference 2007 in Bali (Indonesia), with representatives
from the four main partners: ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, the World Mayors Council on Climate Change, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), and the C40 Climate Leadership Group.
