COUNCIL INITIATIVE OF THE MONTH

Bayside City Council, Victoria: Sustainable Living Expo

Background

Bayside City Council stepped up to be a part of ICLEI’s Local Economic Development project in 2006.  Through the analysis undertaken as a part of this program, Bayside City discovered a need to identify local sustainable businesses.

Bayside has been a CCP participant since 2001.

Implementation and approach

Bayside City held their first Sustainable Living Expo in April, bringing the community's sustainable businesses together and showcasing them to the public. Along with organic produce and sustainable purchasing options, the expo featured a number of Australia’s leading experts on a range of environmental issues, including personal carbon reduction.

The local businesses involved included solar panel distributors, green cleaning products, grey water systems and rainwater tanks, organic skin care, and the local indigenous nursery.  Honda and Toyota were also there to showcase their hybrid cars.

Kicking off the event was the ‘Halt Climate Change Now’ human sign.  The sign, made up of 2500 people, was coordinated by the Bayside Climate Change Action group who organised for aerial photographs to be taken.  The ABC program Catalyst subsequently ran a story that featured the human sign and included a discussion with Baysides’s Mayor, Councillor John Knight, on the importance of Council working with communities to tackle the issue of global warming.

While the Expo presented numerous sustainable products, services and advice, there were several displays that specifically related to the climate change agenda:

  • The Solar Charge stall, which focused on solar power and energy efficiency
  • The Public Transport Users Association and the Bicycle Promotion Fund stall
  • The Honda and Toyota hybrid vehicles
  • The Bendigo Bank stall, which promoted its offsetting services.

Benefits

By connecting sustainable business with customers, the Expo will go some way towards raising the profile of these businesses within the community.

The Expo also provided a platform for local sustainable businesses to commence networking with and supporting one another.  A green cleaning products business has partnered with a recycled grey water business to promote one another’s products and is an excellent example of what can be achieved through networking.

In addition, the community received an opportunity to obtain practical information and advice.  A range of experts delivered talks on global warming, household energy consumption, purchasing renewable energy and carbon neutrality, as well as alternative water sources and worming and composting.

Tangible benefits were also achieved as Bayside residents exchanged 500 old showerheads with South East Water during the Expo, saving water and energy.

Lessons learnt

The Bayside community is interested in finding out more about sustainable products and services available in (or near) their municipality. Businesses are keen for opportunities to interact with the local community.

Future directions

Council intends to continue working with local sustainable businesses and providing further opportunities for them to network with each other. This will probably be done via the already established Bayside Business Network.

Council is also considering making the Expo may a biannual event.
