Water Campaign Resources
Case Studies. Over the years, ICLEI has produced a number of water-related case studies. These case studies are available free to ICLEI members and on a cost-recovery basis to others.
Local Water Initiatives. Through voluntary reporting, ICLEI logs local water initiatives and events in ICLEI's web news and annual reports. To access ICLEI's web news, please go to ICLEI's home page at www.iclei.org.
Implementation Guides
* ICLEI (2004) produced an online guide to the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation and Millennium Development Goals, focusing on water, sanitation, and human settlements. The guide has several short case summaries and links to various sites for additional information. Tools specific to regional needs are available. Please contact ICLEI's regional office.
* The Global Water Partnership's Toolbox guides IWRM implementation. Its earlier versions referred to ICLEI's Water Campaign Manual in providing an overview of local governments' role in IWRM (B1.10).
Partnerships and Alliances
* United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (UN CSD). ICLEI is the official coordinator of the Local Authorities Major (stakeholder) Group. At the 12th and 13th Sessions of the UN CSD, the priorities were on water, sanitation and human settlements.
* World Water Council. ICLEI's ExCom Member Margaret Paegeler serves as ICLEI's governor to the council until March 2007. ICLEI contributes to the local government sessions at the World Water Forum (See Local Actions for a Global Challenge 2006) and actively participates at the Council's Strengthening Local Authorities Programme.
Key Declarations and Policy Documents
Chapter 18, Agenda 21 clearly points out: "Water is needed in every aspect of life." Chapter 18 brings specific attention to seven programme areas for water. Issues of water governance are crucial in all these programme areas to ensure adequate water quantity and quality for maintaining and improving ecosystem integrity and water related services. Adequate and appropriate water governance is essential for implementing water resources programmes.
The Millennium Development Goals (MDG) 7 directs actions to water sustainability and access, while MDG 8 calls for good governance.
