State developments and council actions

Trial: Hobart City Council, Tasmania, 2006-07
LED traffic lights have been trialled for a year at a busy intersection in Hobart's CBD as well as at a number of pedestrian crossings. As a result, LED systems will now be installed in all new traffic lights in Tasmania and will progressively replace the conventional systems used in older lights as they come up for replacement. For more information, see ABC Tasmania's article.

Update June 2008: The Minister for Infrastructure, Graeme Sturges, reported that  feedback about the trial at Hobart’s Campbell/Brisbane Streets intersection suggested that the new lights were brighter and more visible. He said it was expected to cost about $3 million to upgrade all 279 traffic signal sites in Tasmania to the new technology. For more information, see the media release.

Regulatory and market structure

The regulatory and market structure of public lighting in Tasmania operates on a traditional model – full retail contestability has not been introduced. It appears that there has not been a formal review of lighting charges.

In addition, councils may have to pay a bundled tariff that does not distinguish between electricity supply charges, OMR charges and capital maintenance, and the rights of councils in relation to provision of public lighting servies have not been formalised into a code of conduct.

Transport is trialling some solar powered school signs. The 12v signs will use LED lights and standalone solar power systems, although there may also be a small number of grid-connnected systems in shaded areas. The signs will operate during school hours through all school zones. For more information contact the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources switchboard on Ph: +64 1300 135 513.

Funding opportunities

Tasmanian Government Office (Canberra) Funding Alert Service
Councils can elect to receive e-mail alerts about new Commonwealth Government grants programs and other funding opportunities available to Tasmanian organisations. This service can be tailored to provide information about environment grants.
