Quality Lighting: Efficient/Effective/Sustainable, IESANZ, 9-11 October 2008, Queenstown, New ZealandThe focus of the 51st Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand (IESANZ) Convention is the provision of energy efficient lighting. The aim of the convention is to bring together experts to discuss current developments and future directions relating to efficient light sources, luminaires, daylight integration, lighting controls and effective design. Public Lighting Workshop, Make the Switch Now! at the Open Day, 7 October 2008, Brussels,  Belgium.
This workshop is being organised by the "Energie-Cites" program, Fedarene and Philips. It will showcase examples from across Europe and discuss technical, political and communication issues in public lighting.

Illuminating the Latest Lighting Guidance: The 12th Annual Conference and Exhibition. 19 June 2008, London
The conference will present the results and recommendations of these nationally coordinated reviews, regarding determining appropriate lighting levels for different situations, preparing funding bids, ensuring lighting systems are working efficiently, the provision of passively safe lighting and sign installations, and whether recommendations can be made for fewer signs and bollards to be lit, particularly on difficult to maintain refuges.

3rd International Solar Cities Congress 2008, 17-21 February 2008, Adelaide
This congress featured two sustainable public lighting sessions. Gabrielle Breen, Cities for Climate Protection Program, ICLEI Oceania, presented a paper entitled Sustainable public lighting in Australia: a local government perspective on work to date and future directions. In addition, the City Tour field trip on Thursday 21 February visited two solar public lighting installations. For more information, see the Congress website.

Cairns International Public Works Conference, 26-31 August 2007
The Cairns International Public Works Conference included a workshop on climate change (with a keynote address by Don Henry, Executive Director, Australian Conservation Foundation) and a sustainable public lighting workshop.

Accelerating Now! ICLEI Oceania Conference, May 2007
The conference included several public lighting events, such as the Accelerating Sustainable Public Lighting Actions Workshop led by Gabrielle Breen, CCP Public Lighting Manager, ICLEI Oceania, with Paul Brown, Nillumbik Shire Council;  Bronwyn Pollock, Australian Greenhouse Office in the Department of the Environment and Heritage; and Jeff Green, Coffs Harbour City Council. The conference also featured two sustainable public lighting night tours and a sustainable industries networking event. New South Wales

Leading the Sustainability Agenda, ICLEI-A/NZ, June 2005
This conference included a session entitled "How many CCP councils does it take to change a lightbulb? Australian public lighting projects" [PDF document 5.6MB]. Speakers included Alex Fearnside, Australian Greenhouse Office in the (former) Department of the Environment and Heritage; Thomas Kuen, local government representative on AS/NZS 1158 Committee; Graham Mawer, Next Energy; and Claire Flanagan-Smith, CCP Plus public lighting project, ICLEI-A/NZ. The forum covered national developments, the Australian Standards and energy efficiency, the Street Lighting Improvement Program (SLIP) and Victorian public lighting projects.

NSW Street Lighting Conference & Expo, March 2003
This conference, hosted by the former NSW Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA), presented findings from two street lighting pilot projects run in 2002 and provided an overview of public lighting contracts, regulation, technology, asset ownership and service levels.

Queensland

Energy Efficiency Public Lighting Forum, July 2006
A one-off public lighting forum was convened by the Department of Mines and Energy in July 2006, and attended by Brisbane City Council (BCC), Gold Coast City Council (GCCC), Maroochy Shire Council (MSC) and ENERGEX. The Energy Efficient Public Lighting Working Group (E2PLWG) was established as a result. For more information, please see the Queensland section of State Information.

South Australia

Public Lighting Workshop, February 2007
The Environmental Sustainability Network held a meeting about public lighting policies on 23 February 2007 at the City of Marion. Councils discussed the what, why and how of public lighting policy, and formed a working group to draft a template policy for comment. Minutes from the meeting are available.

ICLEI-A/NZ Public Lighting Forum, December 2004
A public lighting forum held in South Australia with Paul Brown (Banyule City Council, Victoria) and Jeff Green (Coffs Harbour City Council, New South Wales), which covered public lighting case studies in Australia.

This lighting forum, presented by Sylvania Lighting Australasia, will cover the following topics: history of SLA roadway lighting in Victoria; energy efficient lighting  – minor, major road & security; energy efficient “decorative” lighting - residential subdivisions; environ system featuring  Active Reactor; standards update; overseas trends.

Lighting Up The Road Ahead, Australian Institute Of Traffic Planning And Management (AITPM), 20 February, 2008, Victoria  
AITPM will host a technical forum exploring smarter, energy efficient street lighting technologies and intelligent assessment tools. Speakers include Paul Storey, VicRoads; David Raven, Odyssey Energy NZ; Ian Mackintosh, Mackintosh Consulting. The presentations will include:

  • New energy saving technologies and tools for performance monitoring to achieve street lighting for quality road safety and engineering design outcomes.
  • Reduce energy consumption and opportunities for a cleaner environment with new lighting technologies and less green house emissions.
  • Aspects of the street lighting legislation and new cost sharing arrangements with LGAs 
  • Are you getting full value for your energy bills ?
  • How to optimise your available dollar resources.

Energy for Councils: Grid Tied Solar Public Lighting & Stand Alone Solar Street/Area Lighting Facts & Fundamentals, Lateral Technology and Pecan Lighting, 29 June 2007
The purpose of the seminar was to update relevant council staff on recent technical advances in stand alone solar street/area lighting systems and GTSPL (Grid Tied Solar Public Lighting). The seminar was aimed at councils which have a lot of land development, which are looking for local generation to improve power supply, or which want to eliminate public lighting power costs for new estates.  The invitation to attend the seminar is available for download.

Energy Efficiency Control Systems for Public Lighting, 6 June 2007
A Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action (NAGA) forum on innovations in control systems for public lighting. Speakers included Peter Griffiths (UK) on intelligent PE cell and control solutions; Rob Alexander (Genesis Now) on results from Victorian PE cell trials; and Richard Dluzniak (Active Reactor) on results of electronically controlled magnetic ballast trials. Presentations are available for download from the NAGA Sustainable Public Lighting website.

Sustainable Public Lighting Tour, October 2006
A sustainable public lighting tour held in Moreland was attended by representatives from 10 Victorian councils, Municipal Association Victoria (MAV) and technical experts.

The tour compared the standard 80W mercury vapour with three different types of trial lights: the 42W compact fluorescent, the twin 14W T5 fluorescent and the 50W high pressure sodium. For more information, see Bright Sparks Bulletin Issue 1, Volume 2.

Sustainable public lighting workshop, 13 March 2008
Hosted by the Town of Victoria Park, the workshop included an update of developments across Australia, an update on WA action following the Sage report, and discussion of additional next steps for councils, SEDO, WALGA and Streetlighting Working Group. Download the minutes and presentation.

Public Lighting Forum, February 2007
A public lighting forum hosted by the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA) and attended by ICLEI-A/NZ, Synergy (energy retailer) and WA councils. The Western Australia section of State Information contains details of the speakers and topics.

Lighting the Landscape, May 2005
Mike Sage, of Sage Consulting Engineers, presented a seminar on an institutional and technical review of streetlighting in Western Australia. This was followed by a panel discussion involving Andrew Fairs, Manager Sustainable Energy Programs, SEDO, Martyn Glover, Executive Manager Technical Services, Town of Mosman Park,
and Mike Sage.

ICLEI-A/NZ West Australian Forum, May 2005
A public lighting forum hosted by ICLEI-A/NZ with Alex Fearnside, Australian Greenhouse Office in the (former) Department of the Environment and Heritage; Tanya Carpenter, SEDO; Mike Sage, Sage Consulting Engineers; and Claire Flanagan-Smith, CCP Plus public lighting project, ICLEI-A/NZ.

WA Sustainable Streetlighting Working Group meeting, May 2008
The date for this meeting is tba by Melanie Bainbridge following a high level meeting on 14 April 2008. Membership is open to all local government and representation from both technical and environment/policy aspects of council is encouraged. For more details contact Melanie on 08 9213 2039.
